Damian Smith: Curator of Dance SF

Damian Smith was born in New South Wales, Australia. He was trained at institutions such as the Performing Arts School in Sydney and The School of American Ballet in New York. Although Damian’s work is primarily performance-based dance, he has been experimenting lately with ways to make the medium more tangible and lasting. He has headed large-scale, international productions and spearheaded interdisciplinary collaborations involving film, painting, music, and sculpture. One of his collaborative works, Arrellah, 2014, has been on display at the San Jose Museum of Art and at film festivals around the country. Damian has performed as a Guest Artist with the New York City Ballet, Hamburg Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet, Dutch National Ballet and The Australian Ballet. This year he was named Artistic Director for the Satellite Collective in New York City as part of a program of the DeVos Institute under the auspices of the Kennedy Center and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Damian Smith nasceu em New South Wales, Austrália, e foi treinado em instituições como a Performing Arts School em Sydney e The School of American Ballet em Nova York. Apesar de seu trabalho ser principalmente nas performances de dança, Damian tem experimentado recentemente formas de tornar a disciplina mais tangível e duradoura. Ele comandou produções internacionais de larga escala, e idealizou colaborações interdisciplinaresenvolvendo pintura, música e escultura. Um de seus trabalhos colaborativos, Arrellah, 2014, está sendo exposto no Museu de Artes de San Jose e em festivais de cinema em todo o país. Damian se apresentou como Artista Convidado com o Ballet de Nova York, o Ballet de Hamburgo, o Balletde Hong Kong, o Ballet Nacional Holandês e o Ballet Australiano. Em 2015, Damian foi nomeado Diretor Artístico para o Satellite Collective em Nova York, que parte de um programa do DeVos Institute sob a ajuda do Centro Kennedy e da Academia de Música do Brooklyn.
